The International Automobile Federation (FIA) has made new regulations official for Formula One from 2026, with the aim of creating more exciting, sustainable and safe races. The most significant changes include:

Lighter, narrower and more powerful single-seaters:

  • The single-seaters will go from 798 kilos to 768 kilos.
  • The maximum width will be reduced from 2 meters to 190 centimeters.
  • The maximum length will be reduced from 3.6 meters to 3.4 meters.

More efficient motors with greater electrical power:

  • The power of the combustion engines will be reduced from 550kw to 400kw.
  • The power of thermal batteries will increase from 120kw to 350kw.
  • A “one hundred percent sustainable” fuel will be used.

New aerodynamic system to facilitate overtaking:

  • DRS is eliminated and a “manual override” system is introduced that allows the chasing car to have up to 350 kw of extra power to overtake.
  • The single-seaters will have a narrower front wing and a three-element active rear wing.

Narrower tires:

  • The front tires will go from 305 mm to 280 mm wide.
  • The rear tires will go from 405 mm to 365 mm wide.

Security improvements:

  • Stronger structures and more demanding tests will be implemented.
  • The floor of the car will be narrower and partially flat.
  • Goal: a more exciting and sustainable future for Formula One

The president of the FIA, Mohamed Ben Sulayem, highlighted in statements reported by EFE that this new regulation “is defining an enormously exciting future for the pinnacle of motorsport with the launch of a new and complete regulation.”

“We have created a regulation designed not only to improve racing, but also to make the championship even more attractive for power unit manufacturers, original equipment manufacturers and existing competitors,” he stressed.

These new rules seek to create a more attractive championship for fans, manufacturers and competitors, with the aim of Formula One remaining the premier category of world motorsport.
