Tom Werner, Liverpool chairman, said he is “determined” to watch a Premier League match in New York City.

At the moment there are no concrete plans for Premier League matches to be played outside the United Kingdom.

But FIFA’s decision to resolve a court case in New York brought by promoter Relevent reopened the possibility that foreign league matches could be played in the United States.

Werner in an interview with the Financial Times, mentioned: “I am determined that one day a Premier League match will be played in New York City.”

And he clarified: “I even have a crazy idea that there would be a day when we would play a game in Tokyo, a game a few hours later in Los Angeles, a game a few hours later in Rio, a game a few hours later in Riyadh , and make it a kind of day where football and the Premier League are celebrated.”

Werner, recognizing how unpopular the move could be with local fans, said he wanted to find a way to make overseas matches beneficial for everyone.

“Let’s find a way to offer them very cheap travel and accommodation so that if Liverpool play Nottingham Forest, we support the fans coming to New York and make this attractive for the fans as well,” he said.

However, despite Werner’s hopes, Liverpool owner John Henry said plans for a match in New York “are not something I particularly advocate or care about.”

FIFA has moved towards ending decades of football tradition by revising rules that block domestic league matches from being held in other countries.
