Retired General Humberto Ortega, brother of Nicaraguan President Daniel Ortega, is under strict surveillance at his residence in Managua. The Confidencial platform reported that the political prisoner is completely incommunicado and without specialized medical care.

“They suspended any entry of people into his home, even close relatives, and he has not been able to be treated by his private doctor either,” said Confidencial, citing a source close to the family of the former head of the Army and younger brother of President Ortega.

According to the portal run by the denationalized Nicaraguan journalist Carlos Fernando Chamorro, the freedom of his partner, the Costa Rican Ligia Trejos, who accompanies him in his home, was also restricted.

In an interview published on May 19 by the Argentine media Infobae, the retired general criticized his brother’s “dictatorial” power, pointing out the lack of suitable successors among his wife Rosario Murillo and his children. Ortega suggested that, in the event of the president’s absence, elections should be called to avoid a power vacuum.

Authorities confiscated the former military chief’s cell phones and computers after his statements. They also installed a medical care unit in his residence to treat the ailments of General Ortega, one of the historic nine commanders of the National Directorate of the Sandinista National Liberation Front.

However, the source close to the general indicated that it is “a lie” that he is receiving care from his private doctor. The general’s health condition is described as precarious, with risks of a fatal outcome. “A doctor from the Ministry of Health has arrived and the only thing he does is take his blood pressure, and the general complains because he feels that the private doctor who treated him saved him from death,” Confidencial reported.

Humberto Ortega, declared “traitor to the country”

Ten days after his criticism, during an official event broadcast on television, President Ortega and Vice President Murillo declared the retired general a “traitor to the country.”

In the presence of the Army and Police leadership, Ortega reproached his brother, although without mentioning him by name, for decorating the attaché of the United States Government in Nicaragua, Lieutenant Colonel Dennis F. Quinn, in 1992, describing the act as “ treason to the country” and “surrender”.

Curiously, President Ortega himself decorated the main officer for Defense Affairs and Defense Attaché of the United States in Nicaragua, Lieutenant Colonel William Hogan, on September 3, 2019.

Nicaragua has been facing a political and social crisis since April 2018, accentuated after the controversial general elections of November 7, 2021. In those elections, Ortega was re-elected for a fifth and fourth consecutive term, with his main contenders in prison and subsequently expelled from office. country, depriving them of their nationality and political rights.
