During a recent interview for ‘Therapuss with Jake Shane’, Ed Sheeran surprised when he revealed that he hasn’t had a cell phone for almost a decade and detailed the reasons why he decided to give up the use of that device.

It all started when the musician wanted to give his host not his phone number, but his email, and Shane couldn’t help but be surprised. In this way, Ed explained that he threw away his cell phone in December 2015, partly due to the enormous number of contacts it stored, and detailed: “I think I had the same number since I was fifteen, and then I became famous and I had about ten thousand numbers scheduled. So I constantly had people who kept messaging me and I was in contact with a lot of people all the time.”

The Briton explained that he was wasting too much time answering messages, and that motivated him to give up cell phone use, and stressed that he felt that “with phones, everyone expects you to answer them, and if you don’t, it’s rude.” And later he said about it: “Sometimes you just don’t have the energy to respond, maybe you’re busy or doing something else, until you respond, and then they respond to you and suddenly you’re in forty conversations at the same time.”

Finally, and before the surprised look of his interlocutor, Sheeran concluded: “I was simply missing real life interactions, so I threw away my cell phone, got a tablet, moved everything to my email address, and I dedicated myself to answering everything once a week,” he said.

“I have an hour for that task on Thursdays or Fridays. I usually sit in the car, clear out all the emails, catch up, talk to who I need to talk to, and that’s it. If I went out to dinner with my wife, and if she went to the bathroom, I used that time to look at my phone and go on Instagram. But when you’re sitting there doing nothing, that’s when I think of a lyric or a melody. Boredom is what makes someone think about a phone,” she added.
