The Copa América 2024 is about to begin with Argentina vs. Canada this Thursday, but in more than 100 years of competition it is a Venezuelan, Darwin Machís, who has the record for the fastest goal recorded in the history of the tournament.
This is the Venezuelan winger Darwin Machís, who on June 22, 2019 at the Mineirao stadium during the Copa América Brazil 2019 imposed his name in the history books thanks to the goal that opened the scoring during Venezuela vs. Bolivia.
Just at one minute and 15 seconds, Venezuela was handling the ball and a run by right back Ronald Hernández ended in a cross that, although it seemed to pose no danger, ended with the ball in the back of the net thanks to the mischief of Machís.
While the Bolivian defense waited for the ball to fall to be cleared, Machís ran behind the central defender’s back and jumped early to win with a header and put Vinotinto ahead.
Curiously, Machís’ personal performance continued once again for the second half when with a solid shot from outside the area he sealed his double so that Venezuela got its first three points in the tournament.
In 2024 Machís will compete in his second Copa América after missing the 2021 edition due to injury.
