Forward Leon Bailey, a key figure in the Jamaican national team, has resigned from participating in the 2024 Copa América for reasons of “mental health” and is on vacation in Mexico.
As announced by his father and sports agent, Craig Butler, Bailey decided to take a break from international football to prioritize his mental well-being and spend time with his family.
“Leon Bailey has stated that he is taking a break from the Jamaican national team for his mental health and to spend time with his family. His position has not changed. We kindly ask that you respect his wishes,” Butler said.
Bailey’s decision has generated controversy, since the player had been included in the official squad list for the tournament. His absence represents a serious blow to Jamaica’s aspirations in the Copa América.
Bailey, considered the Jamaican national team’s most valuable player, had previously expressed his displeasure with the Jamaica Football Federation (JFF). Last March, he was suspended by coach Heimir Hallgrimsson for indiscipline, which caused tensions between the player and the federation.
The JFF has regretted Bailey’s departure and has expressed its respect for his decision. However, the federation has also highlighted that efforts have been made to ensure the well-being of the players, including the request for personal security for Bailey, which could not be provided.
