The Colombian team talks about enthusiasm and going step by step. Its members ask for restraint regarding the favoritism they have aroused in the Copa América, while they finalize details for their debut on Monday against Paraguay in a Group D match at the NRG Stadium in Houston.
Goalkeeper Álvaro Montero and defender Carlos Cuesta spoke to the press this Saturday at the Houston Sports Park.
Montero stated that they also have the hope that the fans of that country have in winning the Copa América because there is “ambition”, but they are going “step by step.”
“We have had time to polish the small details of the rival, analyze it to have greater confidence and security. On a day-to-day basis, that partnership and that chemistry in the team is built, that is going to be a strong point for us,” said Montero, goalkeeper for Millonarios in his country.
Expectations for Colombia are on the rise as they are considered one of the favorites to win the trophy. The team led by Argentine Néstor Lorenzo is undefeated for 23 games and has eight consecutive wins.
“We all have to get excited about this, get all on the same page, us in the sporting part, you (the journalists) from the media, Colombia in general having that expectation of being able to win something,” said the goalkeeper.
And he added: “We all have that ambition to be able to win something, I hope it can be given to us. We have to build it step by step, game by game, consolidate that idea, give continuity to the good things, work on the things that don’t go well but we are at the same point,” he assured.
Carlos Cuesta, for his part, defender of the Belgian Genk, stated that Colombia has a clear objective and that is to beat Paraguay.
“Within the group we have a clear objective, which is Paraguay, and go step by step, go to the front and then the next games will arrive, the next phases, so we are not concerned about what is said outside, whether we are favorites.” or not”.
Regarding how the team will defend itself against Albirroja, he said: “In many games we have prioritized going out playing short and in others when we see that the rival is ahead and we have the possibility of going long we do so, there are variants. We don’t have a single chance to play, so we have several options.”
And of Miguel Almirón, one of the most incisive in the Albirroja forward, he expressed: “He is a footballer who likes the duel, having the ball, dribbling, finding one on one, so the midfielders and the center backs have to be pay attention and control it.”
