A bipartisan group of United States congressmen this week demanded that Joe Biden’s government ignore the results of the presidential elections in Venezuela, scheduled for July 28, if it is detected that the government of Nicolás Maduro commits electoral fraud.

The legislators are Republicans Lindsey Graham, Marco Rubio, Carlos Giménez and María Salazar, as well as Democrat Jared Moskowitz.

The resolution, widely supported in Congress, denounces the undemocratic practices of the Nicolás Maduro regime, including the alleged misappropriation of public funds, the illegal exploitation of natural resources and the persecution of the political opposition.

What did the congressmen say?

“I hope the United States officially condemns Maduro’s efforts to undermine free and fair elections once again in Venezuela. I urge the Biden administration to up its game when it comes to deterring Maduro’s attempt to once again destroy the pending Venezuelan elections. The Venezuelan people deserve better,” said Senator Lindsey Graham.

He recalled that the Chavista regime has taken measures that are incompatible with free and fair elections and that it is also marginalizing the opposition.

For his part, Senator Marco Rubio expressed his concern about the continuity of Maduro’s repressive practices.

“Maduro’s criminal narco-regime will stop at nothing to maintain its illegitimate grip on power while continuing to attack members of the opposition and undermine free and fair elections in Venezuela. “Our partners around the world must remain steadfast in their call for the release of all political prisoners who are currently being tortured by this illegitimate dictatorship.”

Carlos Giménez, one of the representatives who support the resolution, highlighted the importance of supporting democracy in Venezuela.

“The illegitimate Maduro regime has threatened, intimidated and silenced its people. With just one month left until his election, we must condemn his blatant attack on democracy. “The Venezuelan people are determined to live in a free Venezuela and the United States must help them in their fight for freedom.”

María Salazar, another of the signatory representatives, highlighted the need to protect the Venezuelan electoral process from manipulation.

“While the Maduro regime does everything in its power to steal the presidential election from María Corina Machado and Edmundo González, we in the United States Congress stand firm against its tyranny. I am proud to support this resolution that denounces how Maduro is trying to lie, cheat and steal to stay in power. I pray that Venezuelans recover Miraflores in July,” he said.

Jared Moskowitz, the Democratic representative involved in the resolution, highlighted the plight of the Venezuelan people.

“He is suffering under the illegitimate Maduro regime. If there is overwhelming evidence of fraud in Venezuela’s upcoming elections, the Biden administration must condemn and hold Maduro accountable. “This regime cannot use institutions as weapons to hold false elections and take away basic rights from the people of Venezuela.”

The bipartisan resolution also rejects any attempt by socialist authorities to hold fictitious elections to consolidate their power, calling for free and fair elections on July 28, 2024 and for all opposition candidates to be allowed full participation.

Likewise, it condemns corruption and violence against the Venezuelan population and urged the international community to take action against the abuses of the Maduro government.
