The technical director of the Mexican National Team, Jaime Lozano, appeared at a press conference after the long-suffering victory against Jamaica in the 2024 Copa América, where he recognized the team’s lack of forcefulness and the need to improve in that aspect.
“We are trying against a very complicated rival that is always fighting with Panama for first places, I think we suffered too much, we knew they would put balls into our area, but calm and proud of them,” said Jaime Lozano in statements collected by TUDN.
Although the victory against Jamaica was crucial to start the tournament on the right foot, Lozano did not hide his concern about El Tri’s lack of definition. A solitary goal from Gerardo Arteaga and a goal disallowed against Jamaica for offside were enough to secure the three points, but they made evident the need to improve effectiveness in attack.
“We lacked forcefulness, it was a night from their goalkeeper, he saved them on a couple of occasions and we have to control the moments of the game better, the ball into the area was dangerous. We needed to keep the ball a little longer, play with their desperation, we would have had one more chance; “It is the Copa América and there is no easy opponent,” said the strategist.
On the other hand, Lozano still does not have the official medical report on the injury of Edson Álvarez, who had to leave the game against Jamaica in the first half hour. The Tri captain will undergo medical tests to determine the severity of his injury and his availability for the next match against Venezuela.
“We are going to wait for Edson Álvarez to release a study in a couple of days. The intention is not to risk anything, to know well what he has, he felt something in his leg (…) It is not easy to overcome when your captain is injured very quickly. I think we suffered more, we knew it was a physical issue and that makes them very dangerous,” concluded Jaime Lozano.
El Tri will face La Vinotinto next Wednesday, June 26 at the SoFi Stadium in Inglewood, California, with the obligation to add another victory to stay in the fight for the leadership of the group.
