At least nine people have been arrested for allegedly being part of a network that was dedicated to sending cocaine in speedboats to the United States and Central American countries from Colombia, according to the Colombian Prosecutor’s Office.

In a joint action between the Police Dijín and the Investigations Office of the United States Department of Homeland Security, the suspects were detained in Medellín, Bello and San Rafael, in the department of Antioquia, in the northwest of the South American country.

“These people would be responsible for collecting large shipments of cocaine in Medellín that they acquired in Cauca and Nariño,” said the Prosecutor’s Office.

Part of that drug “was transferred to the coasts of the Gulf of Urabá and sent in fast boats to Costa Rica and the United States,” and the other part remained for retail and the domestic market in the country.

Additionally, during the operation, more than 28 pounds of coca base paste, 85 million pesos ($20,400 dollars) in cash, 12 cell phones, a pistol, 3 chargers, 12 cartridges and elements for dosing narcotics were seized.

“According to the evidence, those captured would fulfill different roles, from coordinating the production of the illicit substance, ensuring camouflage, transportation and storage, among other logistical aspects; and articulate internal marketing and international destinations,” the accusing body explained in a statement.

The detainees have been brought to justice and accused of the crimes of trafficking, manufacture or possession of aggravated narcotics and conspiracy to commit a crime.
