Former President Donald Trump could announce his vice presidential candidate this week, after confessing that he already knows who it will be, according to what NBC News published this Tuesday.

According to the media, the presumptive Republican presidential candidate could announce his running mate even before the debate against Biden this Thursday in Atlanta. However, sources close to the Trump campaign told NBC News that it is not certain and that the announcement could be made shortly before the Republican Convention, scheduled for mid-July.

After the news was published, Trump campaign senior adviser Chris LaCivita tweeted: “Yes… it could come as soon as today… or… sometime in mid-July!!”

On Sunday, Trump confessed that he already had the name of his candidate, but did not reveal it. Likewise, the former president added that “very likely” the person will be in Thursday’s debate against President Joe Biden.

NBC News detailed that on Thursday the three favorites for the position will probably be in Atlanta: Doug Burgum, governor of North Dakota; JD Vance, Senator from Ohio; and Marco Rubio, senator from Florida.

The outlet asked the main spokespersons for the Trump campaign about the possible announcement, but they avoided giving a date, as they have done on other occasions, arguing that it will only depend on what the former president decides.

“As President Trump himself has said, the primary criterion for selecting a vice president is a strong leader who will be a great president for eight years after his next four-year term concludes,” Trump’s spokesperson told NBC News. Brian Hughes. “But anyone who tells you that they know who or when President Trump will pick his vice president is lying, unless that person’s name is Donald J. Trump.”

Possible candidates

In addition to Vance, Rubio and Burgum, Trump himself has previously acknowledged that his list of possible vice presidents also includes Senator Tim Scott, Senator Tom Cotton, Representative Elise Stefanik, Representative Byron Donalds and the former Secretary of Housing and Urban Development Ben Carson.

Among them, Senator JD Vance, 39, is the favorite of Trump supporters, according to a recent poll by the conservative group Turning Point USA in Detroit, Michigan.

43% of respondents chose Vance as their favorite, with a large advantage over fellow senators Tim Scott (15.4%), Marco Rubio (7.7%) and North Dakota Governor Doug Burgum, with 7%, according to data provided by the Daily Mail.
