If you’re shopping at a Walmart and you hear “code brown” or “Code B” over the intercom, it’s time to leave quickly.

Walmart uses a variety of other codes to allow quick employee responses to different situations without causing panic or confusion among customers.

These codes have proven to be so effective that many other stores have adopted them as well.

Knowing these codes can help people understand what employees are handling and could even save your life.

Code Café is one of these codes and is used to alert about a specific emergency situation that requires immediate evacuation of the store.

Hearing this code means that there is a potential risk that could threaten the safety of customers and employees, so it is important to leave the premises quickly.

For example, Code Spark means that the checkout area is extremely busy and all available cashiers are needed immediately.

Code A indicates that a spill in a hallway needs to be cleaned up.

Code B means employees are about to clear the store for a VIP customer.

Code C is when customer service is needed somewhere in the store.

Code White signals an accident in the store, where someone may be injured and need assistance.

Code Black is for severe weather alerts such as a tornado, blizzard, flash flood, or earthquake warning.

Although most customers may not pay attention to these codes, understanding their meaning could save lives.

The use of these codes originated with the child abduction prevention program, known as Code Adam, implemented by Walmart in 1994 in its stores in the United States and Canada.

This code is named after Adam Walsh, a six-year-old boy who was tragically kidnapped from a Sears store in Hollywood, Florida, in 1981.

Adam’s case shocked the United States and led his father to host the show “America’s Most Wanted” on Fox.

Code Adam triggers a lockdown at the store as employees conduct an exhaustive search for a missing child.

It is now used in a number of places including amusement parks, museums and government buildings.
