After a sunny Friday, thunderstorms are forecast this weekend with a tornado threat.
High pressure, which capped a hot work week, moves offshore this weekend. It ushers in a southerly wind and builds heat and humidity ahead of a cold front. Saturday will become stickier as the hours go by, but there will be little to no rain until the evening.
Some showers are likely around dinnertime in the Hudson Valley, but it won’t be until late in the evening before the strongest storms arrive in the tri-state area.
These storms will continue to move continuously through the region overnight and will exit early Sunday morning.
Saturday night’s storms will not pass quietly, as any storms that develop could become strong to severe, particularly in northern New Jersey and the Hudson Valley.
Damaging wind gusts of over 60 mph will be the biggest threat from these storms. At the speeds they are going, the winds could down some trees and tree limbs, which could cause property damage and power outages.
If you are near or in the path of one of the storms mentioned, stay in a secure building, away from windows, NBC News New York reported.
There is a slight chance for one or two brief tornadoes Saturday night that cannot be ruled out. The threat is especially concentrated in Pike County, Pennsylvania, and Sullivan County, New York, along with other areas farther inland.
Be sure to keep weather alerts on to receive severe weather warnings when they appear.
Following the initial round of storms beginning Saturday night into early Sunday morning, a short lull is expected before another round of storms develops Sunday afternoon.
Aside from the threat of thunderstorms, Sunday will also be hot. Temperatures will rise into the 80s, but humidity will keep the wind chill in the 90s.
For those planning to attend the Pride Parade in the Big Apple, you may be lucky and enjoy a rain-free day, but the heat in the environment will make the event a little more stifling no matter what happens, the recommendation is to stay hydrated and be aware of your body’s symptoms.
Sunday’s storms will be strong to severe, with damaging winds and possible hail.
Late Sunday afternoon, a cold front will move through the region and bring down the storms.
While temperatures and humidity will drop, which will allow for a great start to the work week on Monday and to the month of July.
