An unexpected measure was carried out by Nayib Bukele, president of El Salvador, because he fired 300 officials from the Ministry of Culture. This was under the allegation that they had agendas that were incompatible with what he presented in his government.
In addition to this, the decision has an economic background, according to the president, since it seeks to save funds from its management. But it would also be related to LGBTIQ+ issues.

In the publication, he assured: “People chose a path and we are going to take that path.”
The changes in the Ministry of Culture have been intense, since on Thursday, June 27, they dissolved the National Choir of El Salvador. In an interview with The printing press, Paula Burgos, former director of the institution, indicated that all the members were fired, except for Gabriela Fernández, who was in charge of the group.
Burgos explained that “El Salvador has a National Choir like any other developed country that gives importance to culture, and now it is being taken away just like that, it is a great loss.”
What do you want to promote with culture in El Salvador?
When they appointed the new minister, they made clear the issues they want to reinforce within the Salvadoran population, as part of the vision of the Bukele government.
Among those are family and patriotic values. For that they have special projects with the National Library and the Historical Center.
They would also be against inclusive issues such as LGBTIQ+ and as evidence of this appears the cancellation of a play with drag actors, titled as Immoral.
The situation caused the Ministry of Culture to release a statement that artists who use public spaces must fill out a detailed technical sheet describing “the nature of the work to be presented.”
In the publication they added: “It assures the Salvadoran population that it will carry out a much more rigorous review of the contents presented in our theaters, halls and spaces to guarantee that the standards established for the enjoyment of all Salvadoran families are met. ”.
The appointment of Raúl Castillo is the third appointment that Bukele has made to his cabinet since he was re-elected, an example of how he seeks to deepen some aspects of his government.
