In the 858 days since the Russian invasion of Ukraine, more than 500 children have died and more than 1,400 have been injured by Russian attacks, according to the State Prosecutor’s Office, which relies on data from juvenile prosecutors.
The Prosecutor’s Office indicated through a statement published on Telegram that to date, a total of 554 children have died as a result of Russia’s armed aggression and 1,419 have been injured of varying severity.
In one day 11 minors were injured
The most affected children are in the regions of Donetsk, Kharkiv, Kherson, Dnipro, kyiv and Zaporizhzhia.
On Saturday alone, 11 children were injured by Russian bombings against the city of Vilniansk, in the southern region of Zaporizhzhia, where two girls aged 10 and 17 and a 15-year-old boy also died.
Eight children aged between 14 and 15 suffered injuries of varying severity.
UNICEF believes that there are more
In August 2022, UNICEF had revealed that “972 children have been killed or injured by violence in Ukraine since the war began, an average of more than five children killed or injured every day.
“And these are only the figures that the United Nations has been able to verify. We believe that the real number is much higher,” she reaffirmed.
Violations against children
In addition, in an article it noted that in order to more effectively monitor, prevent and stop attacks against children, the UN Security Council identified and condemned the following six serious violations of children’s rights in times of war:
- The murder and mutilation of children
- Recruitment and use of children by armed forces and groups
- Attacks on schools and hospitals
- Rape and other acts of sexual violence against children
