The Government of El Salvador, through its Foreign Ministry, presented a national plan with actions that it wishes to promote to reduce and prevent irregular migration of its citizens, who for economic or security reasons seek to leave the country.
According to information from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the so-called National Implementation Plan for the Global Compact on Migration will be promoted with the support of the United Nations Network on Migration’s Project on Creating Partnerships for Migration, coordinated by the International Organization for Migration (IOM) and funded by the European Union (EU).
They seek to reduce risks for migrants
The Vice Minister of Diaspora and Human Mobility, Cindy Mariella Portal, said that the plan “is a working tool that becomes a roadmap for the actions to be developed in the migration field.”
The intergovernmental plan includes 23 objectives that seek to reduce risks and vulnerabilities among migrants, Portal said.
He explained that this initiative “has required extensive work such as interviews, consultations, workshops, follow-up meetings, among others.”
Government commitment to migration
El Salvador, he said, is “the first country in the hemisphere to have a tool of this kind, which not only symbolizes the government’s commitment to migration, but also the country’s leadership in its management at the international level.”
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs also noted that the resident coordinator of the United Nations System in El Salvador, Raúl Salazar, highlighted the importance of the Global Compact on Migration, which “is aligned with the decision of the Secretary General of the organization to establish the United Nations Network on Migration to address it from a comprehensive perspective.”
Security, economy and family reunification
He added that “this global coordination of the United Nations system is also reflected in El Salvador and seeks to continue supporting the strengthening of the capacities of the Government and other relevant actors in migration matters.”
The reasons why Salvadorans decide to migrate illegally, mainly to the United States, are related to security, economy and family reunification, and although the phenomenon has decreased in recent years, according to the Government, there is still no comprehensive plan to address this problem.
