The upcoming July 4, 2024, Independence Day holiday in the United States is shaping up to be the busiest in U.S. travel history.
That’s because the American Automobile Association (AAA) projects that a staggering 70.9 million people will travel 50 miles or more during the holiday week, marking a significant 5% increase from last year and 8% compared to 2019.
The majority of travelers, some 60.6 million, are expected to choose to travel by car, setting a new record. This number represents an increase of 2.8 million compared to 2023. Meanwhile, 5.74 million people will choose to fly to their destinations, an increase of 7% from last year and 12% compared to 2019. Another 4.6 million will use alternative modes such as buses, trains and cruises.
When to travel on the 4th of July: Best and worst times
For those planning to join the wave of travelers, AAA recommends leaving tomorrow, July 2, as the best option. If this is not possible, Tuesday night and Wednesday morning also present themselves as favorable alternatives. Travel on Wednesday night and July 4 itself is advised to be avoided, as the heaviest congestion is expected during these periods.
This year, the Pacific Northwest is shaping up to be the most popular destination, with Seattle, Vancouver and Anchorage leading the pack. South Florida beaches, Honolulu and Punta Cana are also experiencing high demand. Paula Twidale, senior vice president of travel at AAA, attributes this increase to “summer vacations in full swing and the flexibility of remote work.”
Tips for Air Travelers and Drivers on July 4th
For those traveling by plane, it is recommended to arrive at the airport two hours in advance, reserve parking in advance and opt for carry-on luggage to save time and money. Road travelers can celebrate the 17% drop in gasoline prices compared to the previous year.
Given the unprecedented magnitude of travelers this year, planning ahead is essential. For road trips, check your vehicle before you set off and be prepared for traffic. If you’re traveling by air, consider booking flights early in the day to avoid cumulative delays.
Please remember to stay informed about local conditions at your destination and follow all safety guidelines to ensure a safe and enjoyable holiday. Happy 4th of July!
