The Mexican team was not close to giving away a good Copa América. After their elimination after a goalless draw against Ecuador, fans took to social media to ask for the resignation of coach Jaime Lozano.
As soon as the match ended, a movement that arose spontaneously among fans and their discontent began trending on X (formerly Twitter), calling for Jaime Lozano to be fired. The hashtag “#FueraJimmy” was trending for hours.
‘Jimmy’ has been the subject of harsh criticism and a large part of the national team’s supporters have begun to demand his departure because this is the coach’s second failure with El Tri. The first occurred at the beginning of this year when they lost the Nations League final.
Mexico finished its adventure in the 2024 Copa América with four points. The first three thanks to a narrow victory against Jamaica. With Venezuela they couldn’t add points despite having finished and deserved to score. They risked their lives against Ecuador on Sunday night, but they were also unable to show their dominance on the scoreboard.
Despite being tied with the tricolor in points (4), the Aztec team was handicapped by the goal difference. Ecuador scored four goals and received three. While the Concacaf team only scored one and received one.
Despite the fans’ request for an immediate departure of Lozano, this scenario seems not to be in the plans of the Mexican Football Federation (FMF). As soon as the match ended and in the midst of the “#FueraJimmy” movement, the director of national teams, Duilio Davino confirmed that the project with the young strategist is still underway.
Even the Tri midfielder, César Chino Huerta, said that in the locker room they were wholeheartedly supporting Lozano’s management.
