A shooting shook the area around the University of Cincinnati early Monday morning after a shooting occurred in which two other people were injured, local authorities reported.

Two people are in custody in connection with the shooting, one of whom is suffering from injuries from the confrontation, according to Cincinnati Police Department Capt. Mark Burns, who spoke to The Associated Press in an email. Several firearms were seized at the scene from the two suspects, whose identities have not been released.

Through a post on social media X, the University of Cincinnati’s Department of Public Safety alerted the university community about the emergency shortly before 3:00 a.m. They later confirmed that it was a shooting and issued a warning for everyone to be alert and take necessary precautions.

Officers patrolling the area had heard multiple gunshots around the campus. When they arrived at the scene, they found several people with gunshot wounds. All of the wounded were men, said local news stations, which were among the first to report the shooting.

An hour after the incident, the Department of Public Safety issued a “situation under control” message, telling the community that the situation was being handled. However, they promised to maintain a robust police presence in the area to ensure everyone’s safety.

Emmanuel Roy, 20, who lives a few buildings down on East University Avenue, told the Cincinnati Enquirer that he woke up for work and was confused by the large police presence.

The shooting was first reported by a friend of his, who studies at the University of Cincinnati, who preferred not to give his name, who heard the shots and received a text message from the university.

“This street is usually perfectly fine,” the student told the aforementioned outlet. “I didn’t expect anything to happen here.”
