Mexico City, the taco capital of the world, became the scene of an intense and delicious search for the best taco. In a 24-hour culinary marathon, YouTuber and chef Joshua Weissman set out to taste and rate as many tacos as physically possible, in hopes of crowning the ultimate champion.

First traffic jam in Mexico City: 7:30 in the morning
The day began at 7:30 am at Fonda Margarita, a place with more than 60 years of history and a family-style menu.
Here, Joshua sampled three breakfast tacos: beans and egg, pork in green sauce, and chicharrón in red sauce.
While all of the tacos offered unique flavors, the chicharrón one stood out with a rating of 7.7 out of 10, thanks to its rich texture and flavor.
“This second bite was the one that won me over; it’s super delicious, by far my favorite of the three,” Weissman said.
From vegetarian tacos to carnitas
The diversity of taco offerings in Mexico City was made clear when we tried a vegetarian avocado taco at Maho.
Surprisingly, this taco earned a high rating of 8, thanks to its freshness and well-balanced flavors. “It’s very refreshing, light, an excellent bite,” Joshua described.
In the carnitas category, the choice was divided between the traditional and a richer, more aggressive version. Both tacos received a rating of 8.5, standing out for their juiciness and diverse textures.
“If you’re looking for something more balanced and with good texture, this is the one to go for. Both are great,” Weissman said.
Tacos with chorizo, octopus and more
The taco marathon continued with stops at Tacos Los Alexis and Selena, where Joshua tried tacos made with carne asada, chorizo, and even octopus.
Each of these tacos brought a new dimension of flavor and texture, keeping the excitement of the quest alive.
“This taco is the most unique one I’ve had all day. I love the mix of textures and flavors,” she said of the octopus taco.
After 24 hours of non-stop tasting, Joshua’s quest culminated with a Barbacoa taco at a restaurant called El Hidalguense.
This taco, served on a blue corn tortilla, earned the highest rating of 9.2, cementing itself as the best taco of the day and possibly in the world.
“Not only does this taco solidify its position as the best breakfast taco we’ve ever had, but in my opinion, it’s the best taco we’ve had in the past 24 hours,” Weissman said.
