Prior to its world premiere in theaters, “Beetlejuice Beetlejuice,” the latest film from legendary director Tim Burton and sequel to the 1988 classic, will open one of the most important film festivals in the world: the Venice Film Festival.
According to the Italian festival itself, which will celebrate its 81st edition this year, the horror-comedy film, which will bring back Oscar nominee Michael Keaton as the feared Beetlejuice, will be seen for the first time on August 28 of this year for those attending the inaugural screening.
“Presenting this film in a world premiere at the Venice Film Festival means a lot to me.”
“Beetlejuice” returns in style
Since its announcement years ago, the second part of the film that put Tim Burton in the cinema elite, became one of the most anticipated productions, not only among fans of the original film but also among a wide sector of fans of the American film and horror stories.
And in addition to the return of part of the original cast, such as Keaton, Winona Ryder and Catherine O’Hara, the second part added new and established faces such as the also Oscar-nominated Willem Dafoe, the legendary Italian actress, and current partner of Burton, Monica Bellucci, as well as one of the most acclaimed young actresses of recent years: Jenna Ortega.
According to Alberto Barbera, artistic director of the Venice Film Festival, the inclusion of the sequel to “Beetlejuice” means the “long-awaited return of one of the most iconic characters in Tim Burton’s cinema,” who returns to the director’s chair five years after his last film, “Dumbo,” in 2019.
After its screening in Venice, “Beetlejuice Beetlejuice,” which will not compete for any awards, will hit theaters on September 5 of this year.
The Venice Film Festival is beginning to “take shape”
Prior to the recent announcement of the opening of Burton’s latest film, the same festival, through Barbera, revealed that legendary actress Sigourney Weaver, recognized as one of the most iconic artists in action cinema for her role in the “Alien” saga, will be awarded the coveted Golden Lion in recognition of her career in the film field.
In addition to Weaver, Australian director Peter Weir will also be honoured with the Honorary Golden Lion. Meanwhile, French actress Isabelle Huppert will become the president of this year’s competition jury. The full programme will be revealed on 23 July.
