A lucky Illinois lottery player won a $1 million jackpot on a scratch-off ticket, but initially thought she had made a mistake.
The winner, an Illinois resident, purchased the ticket at a Walmart located at 1050 North Rohlwing Road in Addison.
“I was at Walmart the other night when I saw the new Celebration instant tickets and they caught my eye so I bought a $10 one,” the lucky winner said.
“I didn’t think much about it. In fact, I put it in my bag and forgot about it until the next morning,” she added.
The next day, while scratching the ticket, the woman noticed that she had a number that matched the $1 million jackpot. “I thought it was a mistake,” she said.
Like other lottery prizes, winnings are subject to taxes.
In Illinois, winners must pay almost 5% state taxes and 24% federal taxes, so the winner will lose almost 30% of her prize in taxes.
“I have had five children, ten grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. My husband and I were married for forty-nine years until he passed away in October,” said the winner.
“He was the breadwinner of the family and took care of us all. I truly believe this winning ticket is a blessing from him.”
