Mauricio Sulaimán, president of the World Boxing Council (WBC), announced the expulsion of Ryan García (24-1) from the Council and from any event related to the WBC.
The 25-year-old boxer has been embroiled in controversy since he fought Devin Haney (31-0) and the fight was annulled due to his positive doping test for ostarine, which resulted in a one-year suspension.
“Exercising my authority as WBC President, I am hereby expelling Ryan Garcia from any activity related to our organization. We reject any form of discrimination. I fear for the well-being of Ryan Garcia, who has declined multiple attempts to receive help from us with mental health and substance abuse,” reads the message posted on Mauricio Sulaiman’s social network (@wbcmoro).
The executive’s decision came hours after the American boxer of Mexican descent disrespected believers of Islam and George Floyd, a fatal victim of police brutality.
With Mauricio Sulaimán, the WBC has the precedent of the American boxer Adrien Broner, who was suspended for six months for racism issues, in addition to the precedent of South Africa in the 1970s and 1980s.
Although Ryan Garcia’s professional career began in 2016, the boxer has been competing for WBC championships since 2019, when he sought the WBC silver lightweight title when he faced Romero Duno at the MGM Grand Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada.
‘King Ry’ made two successful defenses of the same belt against Francisco Fonseca in 2020 and against Luke Campbell in 2021.
