Since Euro 1988, which was played on Spanish soil and marked the end of Miguel Muñoz’s era at the helm of the national team, Germany have not managed to beat Spain in an official match.

This 36-year winning streak for La Roja has been littered with memorable moments, such as Fernando Torres’ goal in the Euro 2008 final, Carles Puyol’s header in the 2010 World Cup semi-finals and the 6-0 rout in the Nations League.

La Roja began their footballing dominance in Vienna on June 29, 2008, with a goal from Fernando Torres that marked the beginning of a new era. Two years later, at the World Cup in South Africa, Carles Puyol’s header from a Xavi corner propelled Spain to the world title. On both occasions, the qualifying matches against Germany went Spain’s way.

In the 36 years since their last competitive win over Spain, Germany have only managed to win in friendly matches. Of the last six competitive encounters, Spain have won three and drawn the other three.

The last precedent was at the World Cup in Qatar, where a draw after a goal from Morata and a goal from Füllkrug in the final minutes deprived Spain of victory.

In total, there have been 26 matches between the two teams, with 8 wins for Spain, 9 for Germany and 9 draws. La Roja has scored 32 goals and conceded 31. In the European Championships, Spain has two wins and Germany one.

Recent history demonstrates Spain’s clear superiority over Germany in official matches. La Roja will look to continue this winning streak at Euro 2024, where both teams meet again on the road to glory.
