The technical director of the Esmeraldas del CLub León, Jorge Bava, spoke out in response to the growing calls to fire Jaime Lozano and appoint Marcelo Bielsa as the new coach of the Mexican national team for the 2026 World Cup process after the lamentable performance of the Aztec team during their participation in the 2024 Copa América in the United States, in which they were eliminated in the Group Stage.

According to TUDN, Bava acknowledged the work that Marcelo Bielsa has done to change the face of the Uruguay national team after the poor performance they had during the Qatar 2022 World Cup by taking advantage of all the raw material of players that the Uruguayan team has to be able to implement his strategies; despite this, he maintained that he possibly would not have had said benefits within the Tri if he were signed by the Mexican Football Federation (FMF).

“I must admit that he is a coach who has his stamp, that every team he has managed shows his hand, that is undeniable. I love the way Uruguay plays and the way Uruguay makes them play, one feels proud. But I must also acknowledge that Uruguay also has individual and exuberant quality today, in a very good moment. But well, obviously he made us raise our level without a doubt,” he said.

The coach of the felines stated that he does not know if the Mexican team would have had a better sporting performance under the orders of Marcelo Bielsa or with what has been seen so far with Jaime Lozano, so it is impossible to verify if the Aztec team would be experiencing the same problem.

“I think that he (Bielsa) has also benefited from a different approach in terms of the system or model that was that of Maestro Tabárez. I think that Uruguay has the raw material today, it has a great squad, it has a great coach,” he explained.

“We have to look at the processes that they had before, which pave the way for the growth of players and for the coach in charge to be able to take advantage of it and reach the best version individually and collectively. With the hypothetical coach that would have come if Marcelo had not come, I think Uruguay would have been competitive in every way, I don’t know if in this way or differently, but it would have been competitive,” concluded Bava.
