Portuguese star Cristiano Ronaldo hinted, through a message on his social networks, that he will continue playing for his country’s national team.

Cristiano Ronaldo said that the legacy left by his generation in the Portuguese team “will continue to be built” in the future with him and his fans at the forefront.

Less than 24 hours after Portugal’s elimination in the quarter-finals of the European Championship (by France on penalties), the 39-year-old former Real Madrid player left the door open to continue responding to possible calls from his national team coach Roberto Martínez.

“We wanted more. We deserved more. For ourselves and for each of you. For Portugal. We are grateful for everything you have given us and for everything we have achieved so far. On and off the pitch, I am sure that this legacy will be honoured and will continue to be built. Together,” he wrote on ‘X’.

We wanted more. We deserved more. For us. For every one of you. For Portugal.

We are grateful for everything you give us and for everything we have conquered here so far.

Cristiano Ronaldo played in all of Portugal’s matches at the European Championships. In total, he started all five: the three in the group stage (Czech Republic, Turkey and Georgia), the round of 16 (Slovenia) and the quarter-final (France).

He missed a penalty in extra time against Slovenia and scored in the shootouts of that game and the one against France. But he left the Euros without scoring a goal from open play in the 486 minutes he played, the second for his team only behind goalkeeper Diogo Costa, who had 510.

The image of the star crying inconsolably after missing a penalty against Slovenia in extra time of the round of 16 speaks of the anxiety he has suffered.
