Maxwell Johnston, a suspect in the murder of a woman, died after shooting himself during a confrontation with police in the New Jersey town of Toms River yesterday.

Johnston, 35, died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound after an hours-long standoff at a home in the 1900 block of Ravenwood Drive, local police said.

The gunman was wanted on suspicion of killing 25-year-old mother Gabriella Caroleo on June 27 in Manchester Township. The motive for that killing and any possible link between the two men are unclear.

Police found Caroleo with a gunshot wound to the stomach. She was flown to Jersey Shore University Medical Center in Neptune, where she died from her injuries, leaving behind a 3-year-old baby. While on the run, Johnston was charged with murder and weapons-related offenses, police said. Asbury Park Press.

All charges are merely accusations and the defendants are presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.

The standoff yesterday lasted seven hours, police said, and at one point officers called the incident an active gunman situation, he said. ABC News. Homes in the immediate area were temporarily evacuated. “We thank everyone in the neighborhood for their patience as this situation winds down and there is no further danger to the public,” said Ocean County District Attorney Bradley D. Billhimer.

In a similar case, last month a man wanted on a warrant in Long Island (NY) was found dead in the back of a pickup truck during a traffic stop in Woodbridge Township, New Jersey.

That suicide occurred just one day after a 46-year-old man suspected of shooting a young man in Harlem (NYC) was killed in a shootout with police at a nightclub also in Woodbridge Township (NJ). Several agencies, including the New Jersey State Police (NJSP) and the New York City Police Department (NYPD), were involved in that shooting, which left two officers injured.
