Renowned American writer Stephen King has asked President Joe Biden not to run again in the US presidential election.

“Joe Biden has been an excellent president, but it is time for him to announce — for the benefit of the America he clearly loves — that he will not run for reelection,” he said in a message on X.

In this way, the writer, author of renowned novels such as ‘The Shining’ or ‘It’, joins the voices outside of politics that have asked President Biden to withdraw from the presidential race after his disastrous debate against former President Donald Trump on June 27.

In addition to King, Disney heiress Abigail Disney and Netflix co-founder Reed Hastings, who have spent millions in funding for Democratic campaigns and events for years, have also spoken out.

“Biden must step aside to allow a strong Democratic leader to defeat Trump and keep us safe and prosperous,” Hastings said in an email to The New York Times.

Biden says he will continue

Despite public pressure from the co-founder of these important people, from some Democrats and from major media outlets such as The New York Times or the English The Economist, Biden has insisted in recent hours that he will continue with his candidacy “until the end.”

“I need them now more than ever. I’m going to keep fighting. We’re going to do this until the end,” Biden said last Wednesday during a video call with his electoral team, sources told EFE.

On Monday, he also sent a letter to Democratic congressmen saying that he will continue his fight against former President Trump.

However, the polls do not seem to support the president. While former President Trump has 42% of voting intention, the Democrat has 39.8%, according to the average of polls carried out by the website FiveThirtyEight. The Republican is even ahead in all the swing states, including Biden’s home state of Pennsylvania.
