The fortunately unsuccessful attack against former President and Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump is reprehensible. All forms of violence are condemnable and are offensive to society as a whole.

Peace, harmonious coexistence and dialogue to find solutions for the general benefit of the nation must be the axes of every political process, and there is no room for violence.

It is encouraging that Trump is safe and well, as his campaign has reported, and we hope he makes a full recovery.

It is tragic and painful that one person who was attending the Republican rally in Pennsylvania where the incident occurred was killed in the attack and that two other people are seriously injured. We express our condolences and solidarity to these victims and their families, and hope that the injured people recover.

Violence in all its forms must cease and society as a whole must unite to this end. Political differences and differing visions are valid but must be contrasted and resolved through dialogue, civility and the law. And it is imperative that mutual respect be the norm at all times and that society unite in a common cry for peace, democracy, freedom and respect for all. Nothing justifies violence.

It is clear that there is serious tension throughout the country following this event, and therefore calm must prevail and further tensions must be avoided. The government at all levels, the parties, candidates and their campaigns, the institutions and society in general must participate in this effort to ease tension and understand the situation.

A thorough and law-abiding investigation must be carried out to identify the attacker, who was reportedly shot dead by law enforcement during the incident, and to identify the possible motives and contexts for his actions. But it is necessary that the facts and evidence, the exercise of reason and the rule of law, lead to conclusions, lessons and actions to follow. Stigmatization, generalization, scapegoating, obstruction and any practice that distorts reality or uses it to catalyze confusion or further violence are unacceptable, must not take place and must cease.

American society is at a turning point in which it is imperative that dialogue, the peaceful resolution of differences, and democracy based on free voting, the validity of fundamental rights, calm justice, and respect for others be the paths to follow.

In critical times, societies and their leaders must uphold reason and staunchly defend peace, democratic values, institutions and the rights of all.

A resounding no to political violence and all forms of violence must therefore be expressed, and a call must be made for civility, respect, solidarity, democracy and peace. If the United States unites in this way, it will not only curb polarization and tensions, but will also be able to take the correct and humane path at this historic crossroads.
