Uruguayan striker Luis Suárez saved his team this Saturday by scoring a goal in stoppage time (90+2) that helped La Celeste draw 2-2 against Canada and win on penalties, thus taking third place in the 2024 Copa América.

The Canadian team showed that it was always looking to win a medal despite its debut profile and came close to achieving it, thanks to goals from Ismael Koné and Jonathan David, who overcame the initial advantage given by Rodrigo Betancur in just the 8th minute.

However, it was then that Suarez’s character came into play to send the match to a penalty shootout after taking advantage of a low cross from Jose Maria Gimenez during a counterattack that Canada could not resist.

The goal was a relief for Suárez, who had barely played any minutes for his national team during the current Copa América, playing just 15 minutes in the group stage and coming on as a substitute against Brazil, Colombia and also Canada.

In the penalty shoot-out, luck smiled on Uruguay. All four of their shots on goal from the spot ended up hitting the net, while Canada, after making the first two, ended up missing their last two, including one by Alphonse Davies who tried to take a chipped shot “Panenka style” and his shot crashed into the crossbar defended by Sergio Rochet.

In this way, Uruguay has won a new medal for its historic Copa América record and also ended up receiving $5 million dollars as part of the prize awarded by Conmebol for finishing in third place in the competition.
