Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro has described as an “attack” the shooting that wounded former US President Donald Trump on the right side of his head at a political event in the state of Pennsylvania, the last rally before the Republican National Convention.

Maduro, who is campaigning for the presidency, said during a rally in Carabobo state: “I want, on behalf of our people, to repudiate the attack against former President Donald Trump, wish him a speedy recovery, and may God bless the people of the United States.”

The socialist candidate for the presidential elections in Venezuela, which will be held on July 28, acknowledged that both have been adversaries, but assured that he wishes the former Republican president “health and a long life.”

“I was also the victim of an attack and 100 attempts to kill me, but God always had his hand and here we are, healthy, alive and victorious, ready to face the future. I am in God’s hands,” he declared.

What happened to Donald Trump in Pennsylvania?

The 78-year-old New York businessman was holding a rally in Butler when the attack occurred. After being on stage for just 10 minutes, he was hit in the right ear by a bullet and was rushed to a medical facility by Secret Service agents..

What was the relationship between Donald Trump and Nicolás Maduro?

During Donald Trump’s presidency (2017-2021), the relationship between the United States and Venezuela was characterized by deep tension, marked by the recognition of Juan Guaidó as legitimate interim president in 2019, severe economic sanctions against the regime of Nicolás Maduro, and firm support for the Venezuelan opposition.

The Republican also imposed restrictions on Venezuela’s oil industry. Despite the break in diplomatic relations and threats of military intervention, the Trump administration focused on financially isolating Maduro and supporting Guaidó’s efforts to restore democracy in Venezuela.

In 2019, Maduro broke off diplomatic relations with the United States and ordered the withdrawal of American diplomatic personnel from the country. Despite this, the Republican administration continued its efforts to support the opposition and weaken the socialist regime.
