Spain’s 2-1 victory over England in the Euro 2024 final in Berlin, Germany, on Sunday had an unusual defensive player, after midfielder Dani Olmo cleared a shot off the line that could have made it 2-2 for the British.

Although the star of the match was Real Sociedad winger Mikel Oyarzabal, who scored the 2-1 for Spain in the 86th minute after an assist from Marc Cuccurella, Olmo played the hero by saving a goal that was almost a sure thing.

Seeing themselves down and with so little left on the scoreboard, England mounted Spain and up to nine players invaded their area, leading to a clearance by the Iberians that ended in a corner kick.

In Cole Palmer’s execution, the Spanish defence neglected Declan Rice, who came running from outside the area to head the ball, forcing goalkeeper Unai Simón to defend his goal.

However, the rebound fell to Jude Bellingham who was once again ready to beat Spain with a header, but it was then that Olmo appeared to reject the shot, also with a header, and prevent the match from going into extra time.

The Leipzig midfielder’s defensive action in the Bundesliga was celebrated by him and his teammates as if it were a goal, with celebrations and shouts of congratulations after he made it past the goal.

The move ended up being key for Spain to lift the fourth Euro Cup in its history after those achieved in 1964, 2008, 2012 and now 2024.
