Former French footballer Patrice Evra has been sentenced to one year in prison for family abandonment. This was decided by a court in Nanterre. The news was initially reported by Le Parisien, but later confirmed by the AFP news agency.

He was found guilty on Tuesday by the criminal court of Hauts-de-Seine. He was sentenced to 12 months in prison plus financial compensation of $4,360 in damages, plus approximately $2,000 in legal costs.

Evra is accused of abandoning his family between May 2021 and September 2023. However, the former captain of the French national team and legend of clubs such as Manchester United and Juventus, has reportedly decided to appeal the decision.

According to the lawyer of the former partner of the former footballer, Sandra Evra, he is owed more than $900,000 dollars in alimony. The other party claims that her client gave away an apartment, a house and almost $2,000,000 million dollars.

“I hope that, thanks to this decision, Patrice Evra will finally understand that he is not above the law and that we cannot abandon our wife and children overnight. Even more so when they met when he was 15 and she followed him around the world to support his football career,” said Nathalie Dubois, the plaintiff’s lawyer.

Although he was sentenced to 12 months in prison, as has happened with other players and ex-players, he may not need to be imprisoned because he has no criminal record, only one sentence for compensation for insults.

Patrice Evra has already been convicted in the past

Patrice Evra has not yet made any public statements on the matter. However, this is not the first time he has been involved in legal problems.

Last year he was also ordered to pay more than $1,000 for homophobic insults. He also had to pay $1,600 in damages to the associations ‘Mousse’ and ‘Stop Homophobia’, and another $1,000 to each for legal costs.

The insults were in 2019, when Evra celebrated PSG’s elimination at the hands of United in the Champions League. The former player posted a video on social media insulting the French team with homophobic expressions. “Paris, you are all f******, you are all f******. Here it is the men who speak.”
