Nikki Haley, a former US ambassador to the UN, was invited at the last minute to the convention that will proclaim former President Donald Trump as the candidate for the November elections.

Haley, the latest candidate to drop out of the race against Trump for the party’s presidential nomination, was not initially on the convention’s programme, Efe reports. Her team had recently confirmed that she would not be attending Milwaukee.

However, her spokesman Chaney Denton informed US media on Sunday that she will ultimately be one of the speakers.

The Republican convention will take place from Monday to Thursday in Milwaukee.

According to the newspaper The Washington Post, Haley’s speech is scheduled for Tuesday. The event’s agenda does not currently offer a detailed schedule of speakers.

The announcement came a day after Donald Trump was injured during a rally in Butler, Pennsylvania.

In the incident, a 50-year-old man was killed and the attacker was shot dead by police. Two others were also injured.

The newspaper The Wall Street Journal suggests that what happened prompted Republicans to present an image of unity, and Haley’s participation aligns with that goal.

On July 9, the former governor of North Carolina announced that she was releasing her 97 delegates to vote in favor of Trump at the convention.

The former president needs the votes of 1,215 delegates to secure the nomination, although he already has 2,268, which guarantees his position.

Haley won just 97 delegates and resigned in March after a poor showing on Super Tuesday, the day with the highest number of primary states.

By withdrawing, the politician did not follow the tradition of publicly endorsing her rival for the November elections and instead urged Trump to earn the trust of his voters.

In May, he changed his position and decided to support Trump.
