Corey Comperatore, a 50-year-old firefighter and father of two daughters, has been identified as the fatal victim in the attack on former President Donald Trump during a rally in Pennsylvania on Saturday.
Pennsylvania Gov. Josh Shapiro confirmed Comperatore’s identity at a news conference, saying the release was authorized by his wife. The victim, a staunch Trump supporter, died shielding his family from gunfire during the attack.
“Corey was very excited to be at the event and he died a hero,” the governor said.
Pennsylvania State Police have revealed the identities of the other two injured: David Dutch, 57, of New Kensington, and James Copenhaver, 74, of Moon Township. Both are in stable condition, according to authorities cited by Efe news agency.
Governor Shapiro called on political leaders to reduce hateful rhetoric and look to a better, brighter future for the nation. He also described the attempted assassination of Trump as unacceptable and tragic, and wished the former president, with whom he had not yet had a chance to speak, a speedy recovery.
Shapiro also mentioned that he spoke with the families of Corey Comperatore and one of the injured about their situation.
During the rally in Pennsylvania, Donald Trump was shot in the right ear by Thomas Matthew Crooks, a 20-year-old man. The AR-15 semi-automatic rifle used in the attack was legally purchased by the attacker’s father.
Local law enforcement officials said they found two explosive devices in Crooks’ vehicle and at his Bethel Park, Pennsylvania, residence. The shooter was killed by the Secret Service after firing several shots from a rooftop near the stage where the Republican was standing.
