An alarming situation occurred at the 2024 Copa América final between Argentina and Colombia, played at the Hard Rock Stadium in Miami. The stadium was overwhelmed by a large number of fans who managed to enter without a ticket, putting the safety of the attendees at risk.
Despite the overcrowding, Conmebol decided to start the match. The police initially tried to evict the fans without tickets, but under pressure from the crowd, the entrances were opened allowing the entry of more people.
According to TUDN, chaos reigned in the stadium: the corridors collapsed and the entrances to the stands became congested, preventing the passage of fans who had tickets. The situation forced a delay in the start of the match.
With the stadium packed to the rafters, Conmebol finally gave the order to start the match. However, the security of the event was called into question due to overcrowding and the lack of control over the entry of fans.
This incident highlights the need to improve the organisation and security of large-scale sporting events. Conmebol must take measures to prevent situations like this from happening again in the future.
