Many Hispanic migrants prefer to live in Pennsylvania instead of New York, and have shared the reasons that influence this decision. Alfy Tavarez, a vlogger of Dominican origin, highlights in a report that this is because Pennsylvania offers tranquility and a better quality of life at a more affordable cost.

According to Tavarez, New York offers a rich cultural diversity, a wide range of career options and numerous opportunities. But he points out that factors such as the high cost of living, high population density and hectic pace of life can affect the well-being of some residents, leading them to look for other places to live.

Why do some Hispanics prefer to live in Pennsylvania instead of New York?

Migrant Miguel Acosta, who has been living in Pennsylvania for 13 years, said that an acquaintance told him about Allentown and a company in the city that offered work from home.

“I came (to Allentown, Pennsylvania) without knowing anything. I came to the interview and they gave me the job the same day. That day I had to start looking for a room. At that time they were paying the same amount here as I was in New York, which was like $15 an hour and the rent here was very cheap,” he says.

He says he could rent an entire house for $700 a month, an amount he paid for just one room in New York.

“I could afford a house here, I could have a car, a more relaxed life. I found the proposition attractive and I had nothing to lose. I just took the plunge. I never had to go back to New York. I developed completely in Pennsylvania,” Miguel adds.

Miguel, who was a kitchen helper in New York, says he has no plans to move from Pennsylvania because the state has given him the opportunity to grow and he is stable. He is a business consultant in Allentown and is also a real estate investor in the city of Scranton.

“I advise small businesses, restaurants, salons, barbershops; from creating their company and the entire development process, to obtaining credit. My business base is in Allentown and I can say that this city has given me everything,” says the young migrant.

Miguel also says: “I only lasted six months, I saw that New York was not for me. I knew that I would never make progress in New York, everything I earned stayed there. Everything went to food, rent, I saw that it was not for me,” narrated the migrant Miguel Acosta, who has been living in Pennsylvania for 13 years.

What is life like in Pennsylvania?

Alexis Jaquez, another Hispanic migrant who preferred to live in Pennsylvania rather than New York, says that where he is now, life is simpler. He also points out that there are many sources of employment and affordable rentals.

He says he is in the process of buying a home in Pennsylvania. “I have no plans to leave here, what I do have plans for is to buy a house in the suburbs, and my dream is to buy a house with a yard and live in peace,” he adds.

Rosa Pérez and Francisco Plascencia say that they have practically achieved financial independence and the so-called American dream. “Because why does a Hispanic come to the United States? To buy a house, have a good vehicle, a stable family, travel the world, improve themselves. What we ask of God is health,” they declare.
