Part of the Japanese Olympic team competing at the Paris 2024 Games will wear special uniforms made from a state-of-the-art material that absorbs infrared rays.

According to EFE, this innovative garment seeks to prevent voyeuristic photography, a problem that has gained special relevance in recent years, especially in sports such as volleyball, gymnastics or athletics, where uniforms tend to be tight.

“Voyeur photographers” often use infrared cameras that can capture underwear and other see-through clothing.

To combat this practice, the Japanese sports company Mizuno has developed a special thread that absorbs infrared light. In this way, clothing becomes almost completely opaque when photographed, protecting the privacy of athletes.

The anti-voyeuristic uniforms will be worn by Japanese athletes in volleyball, table tennis, hockey, rifle shooting, archery and various athletics categories. In addition, athletes in 14 Olympic disciplines will wear training uniforms made from the material throughout the event.

The development of this thread is the result of five years of research, during which the opinion of elite athletes has been taken into account. Some of them have expressed their relief at being able to compete with greater peace of mind thanks to this innovation.

Mizuno plans to market this yarn in the future for clothing aimed at the general public and is also considering exporting it to other countries.

The Japanese company hopes that this development will help to raise awareness of the problem of voyeuristic photography and promote more forceful measures to combat it. They also hope that surveillance measures will be increased to prevent this type of act, as is the case with the use of hypersexualized snapshots.
