In Wisconsin, an incident at a Subway branch sparked controversy after an employee refused to serve a group of customers because of anti-abortion and anti-gay messages on their T-shirts.

The incident was recorded on video:

Street preacher David Grisham of Amarillo, Texas, was in town for the Republican National Convention.

Together with three friends, he walked into a Subway branch in Waunakee to buy a sandwich.

However, a young woman behind the counter refused to serve them because of the messages on their T-shirts.

The incident, which was captured on video and went viral, has sparked a wave of angry comments from Christians who compare the situation to previous boycotts such as that of Bud Light.

One user commented: “I don’t care what Subway’s response is, I will never set foot in one of their stores again.”

Grisham insisted that his group did not intentionally try to provoke anyone.

Their T-shirts bore slogans such as “abortion is murder” and a paraphrase of Romans I, condemning homosexual relations as a sin.

“A local pastor was buying us dinner and we had barely gotten inside when she saw our shirts and swore at us,” Grisham wrote in a Facebook post.

Title II of the Civil Rights Act of 1964 prohibits restaurants from discriminating against customers on the basis of religion.

However, in 2022, the U.S. Supreme Court ruled in favor of Denver baker Jack Phillips, who refused to make a wedding cake for a same-sex couple, arguing that his refusal was protected by constitutional guarantees of freedom of speech and religion.

In the video, titled “Subway Karen Refuses to Serve Christians in Waunakee, WI,” the woman can be heard confirming her refusal to serve the group.

Asked why, she replied: “That’s a personal matter.” Asked if it was because of the shirts, she nodded.

Subway franchisee River Subs, which operates 48 locations, filed for bankruptcy last month.

Some customers have expressed their determination to boycott the chain.

Subway has not yet commented on the matter.
