In a revealing TikTok video, former Apple salesman Tyler Morgan (@hitomidocameraroll) has shared crucial information about the habits many iPhone users adopt that could be damaging their devices’ batteries.

Not only will these tips help you extend the life of your iPhone, but they can also prevent serious problems like overheating.

Below are Morgan’s top 5 tips and tricks to help you take better care of your iPhone’s battery.

5 things you do every day that are damaging your iPhone’s battery

1) Avoid turning off your phone regularly

Morgan’s first piece of advice is to not turn off your iPhone frequently. According to him, “iPhones are designed to stay on.” Contrary to what some may think, repeatedly turning off your phone does not help its performance or battery. You should only consider turning off your device if it becomes unresponsive or if you need to restart it due to a technical issue. Keeping your iPhone constantly on ensures that its operating systems and apps run optimally and continuously.

2) Stop sending photos by message

Sending photos to friends via messages is a common habit, but according to Morgan, this can take up more storage than necessary. He recommends using AirDrop instead of sending images via message. The reason is that when you send a photo via message and your friend saves it, two versions of the same image are stored on the phone: one as an attachment in the messages app and another in the photo album. This unnecessary duplication not only takes up more space, but can also affect the device’s performance in the long run.

3) Don’t fall asleep next to your iPhone

While it may be tempting to sleep with your phone under your pillow so you can hear your alarm in the morning, Morgan warns that this practice can be dangerous. “Please do not sleep with your phone next to or under your pillow,” Morgan says. The main reason is that your phone can overheat, which is bad for your battery. Continued overheating degrades your battery over time and, in extreme cases, can cause a fire. It’s best to leave your phone on a safe, ventilated surface overnight.

4) Don’t take your phone into the shower

Many of us like to listen to music or podcasts while we shower, but this practice can be harmful to the iPhone. Morgan advises against taking your phone into the bathroom due to the humidity. “The moisture will get into your phone a little bit,” he explains. Additionally, the heat of the bathroom can cause your phone to overheat, especially if you take long showers. Overheating not only affects the battery, but can also damage other internal components of the device.

5) Avoid fully charging your phone

It’s common to want to keep your iPhone’s battery at 100%, but Morgan suggests that this can be detrimental. He recommends keeping the charge between 20% and 80%. This practice may seem odd, but it makes sense from a technical standpoint. Lithium batteries, like those found in iPhones, operate more efficiently and have a longer lifespan when they are neither fully charged nor fully discharged. In the comments on his video, one user expressed confusion about this advice, to which another responded: “Slightly reducing the maximum charge extends battery life. Batteries are most stable between 55% and 60%.”

By following these tips, you’ll not only extend the life of your iPhone, but you’ll also enjoy more stable and reliable performance. How many of these habits do you have? Are you willing to make some changes to take better care of your phone?
