Violence is a constant on New York’s public transportation. Last month, a Hispanic man killed another man during an argument in the street that spilled over into a subway station in Washington Heights. Days later, a passenger was attacked several times by a couple in the middle of the afternoon inside a station in Brooklyn.

A survey released in March found that New Yorkers were generally dissatisfied with the quality of public transportation and many were afraid to use it, citing safety concerns. Crime, accidents, train jumps and delays due to malfunctions were frequently reported.
