The case of Alexander Bolaños’ false identity is one of the biggest scandals in South American football in recent years. The issue had exploded three months ago, but in the last few hours Independiente del Valle confirmed that it had expelled the player from the club after confirming that he had false documentation.

“IDV informs that it has terminated the contract with Alexander Bolaños for falsification of documents, once the entity in charge and governing Ecuadorian football (FEF) has verified and sanctioned the player. The club feels deeply saddened by the disappointment of this situation. We express our total rejection of this type of practice in Ecuadorian football,” detailed the club that in the last hours played the first leg of the round of 32 of the Copa Sudamericana against Boca Juniors.

Following investigations, the CD discovered that Bolaños, registered in the Civil Registry of Ecuador as Jancer Romario Bolaños Caiserra, used the names of his younger brother to falsify his identity document and reduce his age from 30 to 24 years, the digital portal ‘Primicias’ published on Friday.

For its part, the Valle del Cauca team, through a statement on Friday, said that “the contract with Alexander Bolaños has been terminated for falsification of documents, once the entity in charge and governing of Ecuadorian football (FEF) has verified and sanctioned the player.”

The Disciplinary Commission, based on article 220 of the Disciplinary Code, resolved: “to declare the person the direct author of the cited infraction and impose a sanction of three years of suspension from exercising any other activity or function related to football,” the portal detailed.

The case broke through a Uruguayan radio station at the beginning of last April when Liverpool of Uruguay faced Independiente del Valle of Ecuador in the Group Stage of the Copa Libertadores.

Genaro Huacón, an alleged representative of the man whose real name is Jancer Romario, made public the complaint of the identity theft of the Independiente del Valle player.

Huacón is currently in prison in Ecuador for other charges against him related to the crime of extortion and was even reported to the Ecuadorian justice system by Alexander Bolaños and the directors of Independiente del Valle.

The resolution states that the “sanction imposed on the FEF COMET department must be made known so that, as a result of this sanction, Alexander David Bolaños Casierra is removed from the registration system, and so that Jancer Romario Bolaños Caiserra cannot be registered with the FEF for the three years that the suspension lasts.”

Following Huacón’s statements to the Uruguayan radio station, the Independiente directors requested an investigation by the FEF and had proceeded to remove the offending player, who was born in 1994, from the first team.
