Former President and Republican candidate Donald Trump launched a forceful advertising attack on Sunday against Vice President Kamala Harris, who could be the new Democratic candidate for president after Joe Biden’s withdrawal from re-election.

In the ad, Trump accuses Harris of “covering up Biden’s obvious mental decline,” showing footage of the president stumbling. The video also blames her for the immigrant “invasion,” rising inflation, and the “death of the American dream.”

The 30-second video, funded by MAGA Inc., a pro-Trump group, has been circulating on social media and, according to CNN, will be broadcast on television in key states such as Arizona, Georgia, Nevada and Pennsylvania.

The move acknowledges the possibility that Trump could face Harris in the Nov. 5 election. Biden has expressed support for the vice president after dropping out of the presidential race, and several Democratic Party leaders have already expressed their backing for Harris.

The Biden-Harris campaign has sent out text messages to supporters announcing the vice president’s bid for the White House. The campaign’s donation page has also been updated, now asking for contributions “to elect Kamala Harris.”

Kamala Harris confirms she wants to be a candidate

The US vice president on Sunday expressed her gratitude to President Joe Biden for his support in the race for the White House, confirming her intention to be chosen by the Democratic Party to face Republican Donald Trump in November.

“I am honored to have the President’s endorsement and intend to win this nomination,” Harris said in a letter released an hour after Biden announced his withdrawal from the race and asked for Harris’ support.

The vice president pledged to do everything she can to unite the Democratic Party and the nation to defeat Donald Trump in the election. “We have 107 days. Together we will fight. And together we will win,” she said.

Why did Joe Biden resign?

After weeks of internal pressure, Joe Biden announced his withdrawal from the presidential race through a message on social media, expressing his support for Harris: “Today I want to offer my full support and backing for Kamala to be our party’s nominee this year. Democrats: it’s time to unite and defeat Trump. Let’s do it,” the president said.

In a letter to the nation, the president explained that although his initial intention was to seek re-election, he believes that “the best thing” for the party and the country is for him to step down and concentrate solely on fulfilling his duties as president for the remainder of his term.

Kamala Harris called Biden’s action “selfless and patriotic” and stressed that the president “is doing what he has done throughout his life of service: putting the American people and our country above all else.”

“On behalf of the American people, I thank Joe Biden for his extraordinary leadership as President of the United States and for his decades of service to our country. His remarkable legacy of achievement is unparalleled in modern American history and surpasses the legacy of many presidents who have served two terms,” he said.
