Following the Mexican national team’s resounding failure at the 2024 Copa América and the departure of Jaime Lozano from the technical direction, the Mexican Football Federation is beginning to make changes. Apparently, the arrival of Javier Aguirre to the bench along with Rafa Márquez as assistant seems imminent.

The rumours have increased even more after yesterday Sunday the Mexican left FC Barcelona B despite having recently renewed his contract until 2025. For this reason, reports from media in Spain, such as Diario AS, indicate that the FMF had to pay a huge amount to release Márquez from the Catalan institution.

Although no official announcement has been made other than Lozano’s departure, everything indicates that it will be a matter of days before the arrival of the Aguirre-Márquez duo is announced. More work had to be done on the latter.

Diario AS reported that due to the recent signing of the contract extension that the Mexican legend recently signed, the FMF was forced to pay FC Barcelona more than $3,000,000 million dollars to release Márquez.

The reason why the Blaugrana team made official on Sunday the departure of their coach from the B team through a statement. “The Club thanks Rafa Márquez for his dedication and professionalism during all this time in which he has become a fundamental part of the training of players, and wishes him the best of luck in the future both on a sporting and personal level,” they said.

In 82 games coached over two seasons, Rafa Márquez won 40 matches, with 21 draws and 21 losses. Last season he came close to achieving promotion to the second division. Now, all that remains is to wait for the official announcement from the FMF regarding the new members of the Mexico bench ahead of the 2026 World Cup, where it will host alongside the United States and Canada.
