New York residents who meet certain requirements will receive an average check of $1,407 as part of the Enhanced STAR or BASIC STAR program by 2024.
The STAR (School Tax Relief) program is designed to help homeowners offset their school taxes.
In many areas of the United States, homeowners pay school taxes.
These taxes are a significant portion of the property taxes used to fund local public schools.
By 2024, the income limits have increased, allowing more people to qualify for this benefit.
The new income limits are as follows:
–Enhanced STAR income limit in 2024: $98,700
–Enhanced STAR income limit in 2025: $107,300
Eligibility Requirements for STAR Checks
1. Enhanced STAR:
–Be 65 years of age or older by December 31, 2024.
–Live in the home as your primary residence.
–Have a combined income of no more than $98,700 in 2024.
2. Basic STAR:
–Available to all eligible homeowners with incomes under $250,000, regardless of age.
The New York State Department of Taxation updated the STAR credit information for 2024 on its website in April of this year.
Checks will begin to be processed in the summer and most will be issued before September 11.
Recipients can expect to receive an average of $778 for Basic STAR and $1,407 for Enhanced STAR in 2023.
How to register to receive the STAR check
To receive the STAR check, you must enroll in the program.
It can be done easily online or by phone.
Those who have already registered their home will receive the credit or check automatically.
