The technical director of the Diablos Rojos del Toluca, Renato Paiva, wasted no time in launching a harsh criticism against the Leagues Cup and the break that the Liga MX teams must take from July 26 to August 25 in order to play this tournament that they are starring in against the clubs of the Major League Soccer (MLS).

In statements offered during a press conference, the coach said that it makes no sense to stop Mexico’s main soccer league for a month to play another tournament, detailing that this only affects the sporting performance of each of the players because they have to transfer the chip from one championship to the next.

“For me, it makes no sense to cut the tournament. Who am I to teach people how to organize tournaments, but I think that this type of stoppage should be for national teams. Today you start the Leagues Cup, you finish it and then you start the championship or you start the championship, you finish it and then you do the Leagues Cup,” he said.

The Portuguese coach also said that this type of action by the leagues does not occur in European football, which simply adjusts the calendar so that each tournament has its specific days without having to stop a league or cup to comply with another schedule; he said that this is something that the directors of the Aztec tournament must analyze in order to improve.

“It doesn’t make any sense. We all have to improve if we want to improve Mexican soccer, not just talk. We have to improve as coaches, especially a foreigner who comes to the country to try to make it better, to bring important game proposals. I don’t understand, I don’t see any of this in Europe,” Paiva concluded in his statements.

The Liga MX Apertura tournament ended this weekend with Matchday 4 and will resume on August 25, when the Diablos Rojos del Toluca face Atlético San Luis; as for the Leagues Cup, their first match will be on August 1 against the Chicago Fire in Bridgeview, Illinois.
