Virtually and before August 7, the Democratic Party will choose its presidential candidate after President Joe Biden resigns, Jaime Harrison, president of the Democratic National Committee, told local media on Monday.

Harrison said the nomination process, depending on how many candidates qualify to run, will be completed between August 1 and 7.

Minyon Moore, the party’s convention chair, said the nomination process would be “swift, transparent and fair,” according to The New York Times. “While this situation is unprecedented, the process we are willing to undertake is not,” Moore said.

If that timeline were implemented, Kamala Harris, the successor endorsed by President Joe Biden, could choose her running mate by the middle of next week, Politico reported.

Although other candidates could be nominated if they obtain the nominating signatures of at least 300 delegates, and no more than 50 from any one state, the current vice president would already have the necessary delegates to be the party’s nominee for president, according to several media reports.

If only one candidate, most likely Harris, meets the 300-signature threshold, virtual voting could take place as early as Aug. 1, party officials said, and if there are multiple candidates, voting would take place days later but would be completed by Aug. 7.

Party officials on the call with local media said the vice presidential candidate could also be named as early as August 7.

If the nomination takes place in early August, the Democratic convention, to be held on August 19 in Chicago, will be a purely ceremonial affair.

The current vice president’s campaign has already made history, raising $81 million in 24 hours. Fundraising has surpassed $40 million in less than 12 hours.
