Without any specific motivation beyond the circumstances, he accepted the job at the same place as his brother, who was already working in gardening in that country. This, which seemed like an obvious choice, became his means of support. He told his story to Dominican content creator Alfy Tavarez.

“I was motivated to work in gardening by the situation that brought me to the United States. First, in Guatemala you don’t enjoy having a job that much. So the first job they offered me was gardening, here in Maryland one of the most common jobs is gardening,” he says.

Every day he starts his workday at 7:00 in the morning, organizing the team and preparing the workers for the day. In the summer, they extend until 7:00 or 8:00 at night, due to the long daylight hours.

Although the work can be tiring, he is grateful for his job and the opportunity to build a life in his new home.

How did you learn to garden?

Pedro Martínez works for himself and says that he acquired all his knowledge by working for a company for many years.

“That was where I learned what this business was all about and then I decided to start on my own because I had a lot of clients who asked me to do work for them and I finally made the decision. My wife was not very happy with it, but in the end she understood that it was the best thing to do,” he says.

That meant he had to make an investment to start the business.

Does it take a lot of money to start a company?

According to the worker, it is not necessary to invest a lot of money to be a gardener in the United States. He explains that you basically need a pickup truck, a small and a large machine to cut the grass and an air blower or blower.

The biggest expense will probably be the truck, but with the truck you’ll only spend about $2,000 to get started. You have the basics to get started.

Pedro points out that a license is required to work as a gardener in the United States and points out that in Maryland there are places where they can be obtained for $1,500.

“They include a lot of things, they cover a lot, not just specifically the grass. It includes tree trimming, drainage, and often includes fences and platforms, as well as small patios,” he says.

How much does a gardener earn in the United States?

The Hispanic explains that a gardener can earn depending on the magnitude of the work that needs to be done. For example, if it is a 50-meter house, the gardener can charge around $60 dollars, but if it is grass, the amount can increase. Even if the weeds are two or three feet high, the amount is double.

“There is no set price,” says the gardener.

Pedro also reveals that a gardener who is just starting out earns between $500 and $600 per week, approximately $14 per hour. While a more experienced gardener can earn $900 per week.

“If you are alone, $2,000 a month is enough to live on. If you have a family, you need two jobs.

The migrant advises those interested to gain two or three years of experience in any company because that will be the basis for growing independently, in any type of job.

“When you are ready and have the necessary experience to start a business, then you move on your own. Without that experience, I would not recommend that you start anything because you will do the work poorly and you may even end up with a lawsuit,” he advises.
