US Vice President Kamala Harris highlighted her past as a prosecutor at a rally in Milwaukee to harshly criticise Donald Trump, the first former president to be convicted of a crime in US history.
Referring to Trump, Harris said: “I know what his kind of people are like.”
Harris began her speech by recalling her career as California’s attorney general and promising to hold Trump accountable, Efe news agency reported.
“As a prosecutor, I have faced criminals of all kinds: those who abused women, scammers who deceived consumers, cheaters who broke the rules for personal gain. So hear me out: I know the Trump guys,” she said.
An estimated 3,000 people greeted Harris with a standing ovation at a high school in Milwaukee, in the key state of Wisconsin.
Attendees chanted “Kamala, Kamala!” and applauded enthusiastically.
Harris listed some of the policies Trump could implement if he returns to the White House, such as restricting access to health care for people with chronic illnesses.
“America has tried these failed economic policies before, but we are not going to back down. We are not going to turn back. I will tell you why we are not going to back down, because ours is a fight for the future!” Harris exclaimed.
This provoked an enthusiastic reaction from the audience, who chanted “We are not going back!”
The vice president also highlighted the differences between her and Donald Trump, noting how her career as a prosecutor focused on putting criminals in jail, while Trump was convicted on 34 counts of falsifying business records.
The vice president defined her campaign as a movement “powered by the people” and committed to “the American middle class,” contrasting it with the large corporations and billionaires who support Trump.
The rally generated so much excitement that the campaign had to move the event to a larger venue.
With more than 3,000 attendees, it was the largest event yet, surpassing even President Joe Biden’s rallies, according to a member of the Democratic campaign team.
This was Kamala Harris’ first act since Joe Biden announced his withdrawal from the re-election campaign and endorsed his vice president, who secured the Democratic nomination just 36 hours after launching her campaign.
The candidate gave her speech in Milwaukee, where the Republican National Convention was held a few days ago and Trump was proclaimed candidate.
“The road to the White House goes through Wisconsin!” exclaimed Harris, who recognized the importance of the state, during her fifth visit this year.
Wisconsin is part of the ‘blue wall’, a group of states that are key to the electoral success of the Democratic Party.
