Kemoy Royal was sentenced to between 34 years and life in prison for a series of attacks on women in just a few days in June 2022, Bronx (NYC) District Attorney Darcel D. Clark announced.
Royal, 34, was caught because his latest victim used a food delivery app to include a message asking for help, he said. Daily News.
According to prosecutors, Royal raped two women and sexually assaulted a third at his home in Eastchester, New York, over a period of six days after convincing her to come visit him.
The first case occurred on June 13, 2022, when Royal allegedly met a 27-year-old woman in person after communicating for a few days through a dating app. Upon meeting, he forced her to perform sexual acts and raped her, according to the Bronx District Attorney’s Office.
The next day, Royal allegedly approached a 26-year-old woman on the street around 7 p.m., claiming he knew a friend of hers. He then coaxed her into visiting his apartment and when she entered, he refused to let her leave and threatened to kill her. He tried to force her to perform sexual acts, bit her on the breast and strangled her before releasing her about six hours later, prosecutors said.
Royal met up again on June 18 with another 24-year-old woman he had connected with on a dating app. When she arrived at his apartment, he strangled her, forced her to perform sexual acts and raped her at knifepoint after taking her phone, holding her in his apartment and threatening to kill her, prosecutors said.
Early the next morning, the woman desperate to escape told Royal she wanted to eat and placed an order through a food delivery app, adding a message to call the police. The restaurant noticed and alerted authorities, who rushed to Royal’s apartment, freed the woman and arrested the suspect, the outlet reported at the time. News 12.
Bronx Supreme Court Judge Jeffrey Zimmerman sentenced Royal on Friday on multiple counts of rape, criminal sexual act and predatory sexual assault. After completing his lengthy prison term, he will be required to register under the Sex Offender Registration Act.
“The defendant brutally sexually assaulted three women. Thanks to the quick thinking of one of the victims, we were able to hold this sexual predator accountable and prevent him from terrorizing other victims,” said District Attorney Clark.
The NYPD is facing a 10% increase in rape reports this year, and the number could rise further as police say most sexual assaults remain unreported.
The number of sexual assaults committed by strangers has also increased, as has domestic rape. NYPD Chief of Detectives Joseph Kenny said his team would tackle the increase head-on and has added more detectives to the NYPD’s Special Victims Squad.
On Sunday, a 12-year-old girl was dragged down a staircase and raped on the roof of her public housing building (NYCHA) in East Harlem, Manhattan.
